Coimbra Location
   Location

Coimbra is situated in the central region of Portugal near the western Atlantic coastline. It is a wondrous and atmospheric city and well worth taking the time to wander around and enjoy its delights. When one thinks of Coimbra , immediately, one thinks of the magnificent university that hovers with its dense red roofs on a hill top over the city which, on a clear day can be seen mirrored in the meandering waters of the river Mondego.

Established in 1537 by King João III the University offers many delights from its chapel with its 17th century blue and yellow wall tiling with tapestry design to its impressive library known as the " joanina ". A walk around the medieval grounds presents one with a picturesque view of the city and valley.

The upper part of the city with its narrow winding cobbled streets offers many delights for those interested in the architecture. Each year the steps of the old cathedral ( Sé Velha ) in the old square (Praça Velha) host the beginning of the student's festival week "Queima das Fitas" . It begins at midnight with the singing of Portuguese traditional ballads (fado) and is witnessed by practically all students in Coimbra who are dressed in the traditional academic uniform, that of black suits and capes.

A week of festivals follows with open-air concerts every night that go on into the early hours of the morning. The highlight of the festival being the procession of floats prepared and decorated by students.

The lower part of the city is unforgettable. It is a maze of small businesses in narrow streets and some still carry on the trade of medieval guild. The main pedestrian street has at one end the bridge of Santa Clara which, spans over the river Mondego to unite both sides of the city and at the other end the Praça 8 de Maio (8th of May Square). The focus of the square is the church of the Holy Cross ( Santa Cruz ) founded in 1131 along with the Santa Cruz café which is architecturally part of the church, with its stone vaulted ceiling and wood and mirrored panel walls.
For those who like the nightlife, Coimbra is not a problem as there are numerous bars and restaurants that remain open well into the night. *
