The lower part of the city is unforgettable. It is a maze of small businesses in narrow streets and some still carry on the trade of medieval guild. The main pedestrian street has at one end the bridge of Santa Clara which, spans over the river Mondego to unite both sides of the city and at the other end the Praça 8 de Maio (8th of May Square). The focus of the square is the church of the Holy Cross ( Santa Cruz ) founded in 1131 along with the Santa Cruz café which is architecturally part of the church, with its stone vaulted ceiling and wood and mirrored panel walls.
For those who like the nightlife, Coimbra is not a problem as there are numerous bars and restaurants that remain open well into the night. *
